The Meaning Behind The TikTok Term 'Cortisol Face'

  • 0

The term ‘cortisol face’ or ‘moon face’ has recently gained popularity on social media, with users expressing concerns about their appearance and facial inflammation. Many people have shared videos on how to identify ‘cortisol face', however, health experts are urging beauty enthusiasts to use this term with caution. Dr. Todd Dorfman of Rebalance Health, defines 'cortisol face’ as the physical impacts of prolonged high levels of cortisol, a stress hormone. The long-term impacts of excessive cortisol sometimes result in dermatological conditions such as acne, or in some instances, decreased energy levels. "It’s unlikely that everyday stress would raise cortisol levels enough to cause noticeable and extreme facial swelling," explained nutrionist Jess Sepel. Self-care practices such as meditation and exercise can lower cortisol levels. For general inflammation, products like niacinamide can alleviate regular skin ‘puffiness.’
